‘Nesting’ Is A Love Letter to Female Friendship

As shows continue to blur the line between comedy and drama with their bloated run times (I’m talking about you, Ted Lasso, and The Bear), Crave’s Nesting does the exact opposite. The eight-minute episodes – yeah, you read that right – in its eight-episode freshman season pack so much laughter in so little time that when the credits start rolling, you can’t help but think, “THAT’S IT?”

Nesting follows two best friends, poet Rosa (Rosa Laborde) and stylist Anna (Anna Hardwick), who, tired of how difficult it is to find love, decide to embark on motherhood together—in a way that society would deem “unconventional.”

Why is it unconventional? Well, they’re both single and looking for a sperm donor with whom they can co-parent.

A journey like this isn’t one you go on with just anyone. It’s intimate, terrifying, and exhilarating all at once, and these women are willingly in it for life, and the short-form series shows that in every episode. They move in together to cut back on costs (because we are in a housing crisis, after all) and begin to meet potential fathers-to-be together, reeling each other back in when they’re doing a little too much. Like, when Anna starts talking about how big the bathtub is in a potential donor’s instead of focusing on how awful he is, and Rosa points out that he hasn’t even listened to anything she’s said all night or when Rosa’s interested in a man who already has children with someone else and Anna reminds her that they’re not looking to be sister wives.

Just because their relationship is platonic (or is it?), that doesn’t mean it’s perfect, and while these characters love each other to death, it’s not to say they don’t experience a few bumps in the road. When they get into a heated argument about their future and how they want to live it, for a moment, you think it might just be the end for them. But of course, it isn’t – because who would want to keep watching if it was?

Co-created by Laborde and Hardwick, the series is quick-witted, heartwarming, and incredibly funny. Its short runtime leaves you wanting more at the end of each episode, guaranteeing audiences will return if the series gets a second season.

Nesting is available to stream on Crave. Watching all eight episodes will take you an hour.
